I hope that you have all been keeping warm in the recent cold weather. The Christmas holiday is approaching and I'm sure you are all looking forward to it. However, before then we still have a lot of work to do at HIUC, and in particular I thought we would focus on a task that the F-Class did last week.
We started the task by listening to a lecture on abstract art. During the lecture the students diligently took notes, and studied various forms of art. They heard about traditional arts and the use of portraits, and went on to hear about the development of abstract art. After checking the notes and reviewing the lecture with a partner, the students then summarized the lecture and answered questions about the content.
After this, they went on to look at pictures and discuss in detail, what kind of art it was, and how they intepreted the pieces.
Following this stage, the students were to find an interesting piece of art, and bring it to the class the following week. They were also to find out when the piece was painted and by whom, and some of the background and meanings of the pieces of work.
The following week we looked at various pieces of art from both famous and non-famous artists from around the world.
The students made a brief speech in groups to explain their work, and then broke up into pairs to describe and discuss their paintings more deeply.
All in all, I was really impressed with the effort the students put in to finding interesting pieces of work and introducing and explaining their significance to the art world so eloquently.
