Hello. I hope you are enjoying the slightly cooler weather. There are only a few weeks left in the fall term at HIUC. That means that the students are going to be busy getting ready for their final presentations, writing assignments, and exams.
In my reading and writing class, we are working on descriptive paragraphs. A descriptive paragraph is when a person describes a person, place, or thing. The goal is to make a picture with words. When someone reads a descriptive paragraph, the person should be able to clearly imagine what they are reading about. For example, if the paragraph is about a park, the reader should be able to imagine what the park looks like, sounds like, and smells like. They should have a clear picture in their mind after they read the paragraph. We are currently working on how to organize this type of paragraph and on using adjectives correctly. We are writing a practice paragraph now. In the near future, we will probably write a couple more paragraphs.
In my listening and speaking class, the students had to listen to a lecture about Goya, a famous Spanish painter. They had to take notes on the lecture and then use their notes to answer questions on a test. Next week, each student will make their own presentation about an artist that they chose. This way, each student will get presentation skills, and each student will be able to learn about some famous painters.
In this class, we are also working on expressing and supporting opinions. We are starting to work on some debating skills, and in the future, we will have a debate in this class. We will do some debating practice activities, have a mini-debate or two, and finally, have a larger debate.
