Hello. The fall term has started at HIUC Osaka. We are just finishing our first week of classes. It has been nice to see everyone again. The first few days were a little slow. Students were still changing from summer break mode to English study mode. However, most students are now back into study mode.
This term, I have a level 2 reading and writing class and a level 4 speaking and listening class. Also, I have a lot of new students that I did not teach last term. I am looking forward to having a good term with all of them.
In the level 4 speaking and listening class, one of the course textbooks focuses on note taking skills. Taking good notes is very important if you want to be successful in university. We have spent a fair amount of time this week going over how to use the note taking book and looking at the importance of taking good notes.
We did a note taking exercise on a lecture about happiness. It was part of a psychology lecture. Students practiced taking notes and sharing their ideas. After discussing the topic for a while, we also had a listening test based on the content of the lecture. Everyone did well on the first test.
We have also done some practice with reporting news stories and are starting to look at the passive voice. All the students are really good at doing their homework, so I think that this is going to be a good term.
In the writing class, we have been focusing on reading stories and trying to catch the main points of the stories. Then students share their ideas and help each other retell the story. Finally, the students are going to write a summary of the story. This is difficult, but it is a very important skill for university.
We also took a quick look at the structure of a paragraph. This was a quick review of what they learnt last term. It was kind of a memory check for them. Then we wrote a short in-class paragraph. Now that I know what they remember, we are going to start working on what they do not remember and also start to add new information. It will be a tough term, but I am confident that they will all improve a lot if they work hard.
