Well, the rain has finally stopped and it is time to enjoy the summer. We had our last day of the summer semester on Friday, and the students will be glad to have a break, and then tuck into the summer homework that Wes has kindly given them.
The end of the semester saw a lot of tests and the completion of some projects. In particular, the F-Class did an interesting project for the last 2 weeks of the semester. We had been studying about organic fruits and vegetables as part of the nutrition unit in the textbook, and the students were tasked with researching a certain fruit or vegetable in detail. They were to imagine that they making a brochure for a farm or cooperative. The brochures were to be colourful, original and creative in order to gain the attention of the reader. The content of the brochures was to based on the answers to potential questions that people might ask about the product. For example, someone reading about pineapples may ask the question "What are the nutritional benefits of eating pineapples?" The students brochures were to answer 5 questions, plus give other information such as the location on a map, or the website and phone number. In the picture below you can see a student explaining her brochure to her friend.
Once the students had completed their brochures, we worked on making a short speech using the brochure. The students choose 3 of the best questions, and used the questions and anwers as the body of their speech. We then worked on attention grabbing introductions, and appeals for the conclusion. The students wrote the 5 parts of their speech carefully onto 5 cue cards, and practiced and practiced and practiced. Then on the final day, the students each came to the front of the class and presented their project with a short speech. Their speeches were excellent and they made plenty of eye contact and spoke with authority about their products. It was really good to watch.
After that the students mingled and showed their brochures to each other. It was a great way to end the project.
I hope that project gave the students a good learning experience in terms of the vocabulary and grammar concerned, but also gave them confidence as in my opinion each project and speech was a complete success. Well done F-Class.
