Hello. The summer term at HIUC is going by quickly. It looks like all the students have settled into their classes.
This week, we had presentations in my listening and speaking class. The students had to work in groups to design a city. Then they had to describe their city to the class. They had to talk about who it was for and why it was good for them. They also had to explain where they put the buildings and why they put the buildings there. Each group had good clear maps and some original ideas. More importantly, each group had clear explanations and good details about their city. It was easy to understand where the buildings were and why they were there. It was also easy to understand who the city was good for.
The students in the other classes have also been busy with presentations this week.
In my writing class, we have been working on how to make summaries. This week, we finished reading and talking about the graded reader The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Each night, we read part of the book, and the students had to talk about that part of the book the next day. Finally, at the end of the week, they had to write a summary about the story.
We have also written many paragraphs this week. We did two short paragraphs in class, and we did two multi-draft paragraphs outside of class. We are going to keep focusing on having clear topic sentences and grammatically correct sentences. In addition, we are going to start to focus more on having lots of specific supporting details. This will help the students to write longer and more interesting paragraphs.
I hope all the students continue to work hard and do their best.
