Hello. The spring term at HIUC ended a short time ago, and the summer term will start after Golden Week. That means that we have no regular classes going on right now. However, we are keeping busy. We are having an 11-day spring English camp for our distance learning students. Students in this program come to Osaka for an 11-day intensive English camp. They speak English all day from 9:00 in the morning to 5:30 in the afternoon.
The classes are going well, and the students are pretty busy. In each class, students have to do a number of listening and speaking activities each day. They also have to do a few presentations. At night, they have to prepare for the next day’s lesson, and they have writing assignments to do. In my class, we write paragraphs every night, and on two nights, we are going to write longer compositions.
In the class I am teaching, we are going to do two live presentations and one recorded presentation. So far, we have finished the first live presentation. It was a group presentation. Students had to design their own original town. They had to make a map of their town, and then they had to tell the class about their town. They had to explain where things were and why they were there. They also had to explain who the town was good for, and why it was good for them. For example, one group made a town for rich people. They put a marina near their town, so rich people would have a place to put their boats. They also put a casino in their town so rich people could relax and gamble and watch shows.
All the groups had good maps and good ideas. Each group clearly explained where the buildings were and why they were there. They have also been doing well in the various speaking activities we have done in class. Tonight, they will write their first longer composition, and soon we will do our second presentation.
I hope you are enjoying spring.
