Hello. I hope you are enjoying the warmer weather and the cherry blossoms. The warm weather means that the spring term at HIUC is almost over. In a short time, our 2014 to 2015 students will finish all their classes and start getting ready to go overseas. Some students who finished early are already overseas. In fact, one of my students who finished in January left last month for America and now is studying in the state of Washington. Soon there will be a lot more students leaving Japan.
However, before they go, they still have to finish their remaining classes, and they will be busy. This week, the students in my college speech making class gave their big informative speeches. Next week, they will give their big persuasive speeches and have their final exam. Their informative speeches were well done and interesting. They used a lot of the speaking strategies that we talked about and studied in class. They also did a nice job of using PowerPoint slides in their speeches.
In my college writing class, the students are working on their final essays. This week, they have to give me the final draft of their exemplification essays. They will also give me the second draft of their definition essays. That means next week, they will have to give me the final draft of their definition essays. By doing the same essay two or three times, students can learn from their mistakes and improve their writing.
This week, they also gave me the first draft of their essay based on the novel we read in class. We read Oliver Twist. Last week, they thought of some essay topics for the novel and made some rough outlines. They found quotes form the novel that they could use in their essays and shared ideas with each other. Then they fixed their outlines and typed their essays. Next week, they will have to give me the final draft of this essay, too.
The end is near and coming soon, but as you can see, classes are still pretty busy. Have a good week.
