Hello. I hope you are having a good week. The spring term has started, and the students are busy already. I am teaching the college level speech making class and the college level introduction to essay writing class.
In the speech making class, we have already done to mini-speeches. These were very short. They were just to give the students a chance to stand up in front of the class and talk. It also let the students find out a little about their classmates. From next week, we will start working towards making longer and more formal speeches.
In the essay writing class, we are going to read Oliver Twist. It is a novel that was written by Charles Dickens. We are going to read the story, analyze it, talk about it, and do some writing assignments based on it. We are also going to look at some popular rhetorical forms of essay writing. Next week, we will look at descriptive writing. This week the students wrote an essay about rules to follow when doing a homestay in Japan. This is to give them some practice with organizing their ideas. We shared ideas in class, and then the students put their ideas into writing. The first drafts looked pretty interesting. Next week, the students will need to fix their mistakes and hand in their essay again.
The students in the other classes have been busy too. They have given a couple of presentations and have led some class discussion sessions. In this term, the students in the higher classes are often responsible for leading part of the lesson. There will lots of challenges for the students this term, but I am pretty sure that most of them are up for it.
