Happy New Year and Happy Coming of Age Day
Students are back to class at HIUC. It looks like most of the students did their winter break homework, but sadly, there were a few who did not finish everything. Learning how to manage your time is an important part of getting ready for college. In the US, students are given many assignments and deadlines. It is important that they know how to manage their time. One of the reasons why we give our students so many assignments and deadlines is so that they can improve their time management skills. Time management is also an important skill for when you start working.
My students had to give me two book reports when they came back from winter break. They had to read two books and then write about them. I read their book reports over the weekend, and they were all pretty good. The one book report was a new style. It was a compare or contrast book report. We are currently studying about compare and contrast paragraphs, so it was a good chance to give the students some extra practice with this style of writing. Most of them did a good job. I can honestly say that they are all becoming better writers.
Soon we will start essays. It is going to be a challenge, but I think that they are all up to it. For the last book report over half of the students did essays, and the other half of the class did extra long paragraphs. Therefore, I think they will all be okay.
They also had to write one compare paragraph over the break. When we came back to school, they did peer editing, and on the weekend, they were supposed to fix them up. I will collect them on Monday. I am looking forward to reading some good paragraphs.
There are only a few weeks left in this term. It is going to be busy, but it looks like most of the students will be able to meet the challenges ahead of them. There are a few who are going to have to work a bit harder, but if they do, they will be fine, too.
Have a good week.
