Hello. The fall term at HIUC Osaka has ended. The students now have a one-week break before they start the winter term. The final week of classes was pretty busy, but most of the students were able to finish all of their assignments on time. They are slowly getting better at balancing their assignments and other obligations.
On the Sunday after classes finished, we had the Halloween party. I had a lot of fun, and it looked like all of the students and teachers had a good time, too. Many of the regular course students were there, and a good number of the distance learning students were also there. Almost everyone was wearing a costume. It was great to see so many people dressed up in different costumes. At the beginning of the party, we had pizza, sushi, donuts, and some snacks. People were talking to each other in English and eating.
After that, we played a number of games. The teachers and students were broken up into teams and competed against each other. In one of the games we played, each group had to turn one member of their team into a mummy. Each group took one roll of toilet paper and wrapped up one of their team members. We also played a team spelling game. Each person had a straw. There were square pieces of paper with letters on them at one side of the room and the teams at the other side. The goal was to spell the target word fastest. We had to use the straw to carry the paper with the letter on it. It was my first time to play this game – it was really fun.
We also played a game where we had to take a square piece of paper and fold it or rip it to make it look like the target animal or object. For example, the game leader would say dog, and then everyone had to make a dog out of their paper. It sounds easy, but we had to do it behind our backs without looking. Also, we only had 30 seconds to make it. It was a good challenge, and we got to see some funny looking shapes. We played a few more games, and then we had some time for skits.
Each group planned and performed a short skit. We only had a short time to plan them, but all of them were pretty fun to watch. Then four students from the F class put on a planned skit. They did a comedy routine that was pretty funny. Finally, a mixed group of students put on a dance show for us. They did not have long to practice, but their dancing was really good.
The biggest surprise was Lance’s rap. The event organizers needed some extra time to set up an activity, and they asked Lance to rap. For Halloween, he dressed up like a hip hop artist. I was surprised because he had no time to plan, but he got up in front of everyone and made up a rap. Yohei did sound effects and Lance rapped. It was pretty funny and very good. I think everyone will remember his rap for a while. Near the end of the party, the party organizers announced the winners of the costume contest and handed out prizes.

At the very end of the party, we handed out academic awards. We had awards for perfect attendance, TOEFL score, and TOEFL improvement. We also gave out awards for having a high GPA. Finally, we had two students who graduated, so we gave them their graduation certificates. All in all, it was a very fun party. I think the organizers did a great job. I hope you enjoy the pictures attached to this blog.
