Hello. I hope you are having a good April. The 2013 to 2014 academic year at HIUC is over. The students had a busy last week. The level 4 reading and writing class had their in-class essay. They had 90 minutes to type a five paragraph essay. A few of the students had essays that had more than 700 words. These students came a long way in one year. I still remember some of their first paragraphs. They were pretty short and unfocused. They also contained a number of grammatical errors and sentences that were incomprehensible.
The students also had to write a number of tests and exams in the final week of class. Many of these exams were 90 minutes long and content based. For example, on one exam, students had to write about business topics in English. Most of the students also had to do final presentations in their classes. For example, one set of students had to do presentations about alternative forms of energy.
The new students were also at the school every morning for orientation. Josh did some work with them in regards to computers. They spent 90 minutes a day for 5 days learning how to do a variety of things on the computers we have. When the students use the computers they have to use them in English.
The new students also had five 90-minutes classes on general study skills and using an English-English dictionary. We looked at some tips to help them study effectively, and we looked at how to choose a graded reader. The dictionary that we use has a lot of extra things to help students. For example, the dictionary has grammar tips, collocation boxes, sample sentences, and some pictures. We looked at the different parts of the dictionary, and we did activities using them. If you use the right dictionary properly, it can help you improve your English.
Finally, on the last day, we had a farewell party for all our current students. The students had sushi, donuts, and snacks. They talked and took some photos. We gave out some awards, and then the students gave small speeches about what they were planning to do in the future.
As you can see, it was a busy time for all the students.
