Hello again

Wes Cooke

everyone. How did your tests and exams go in school? I hope that you all did well and that you are ready for the upcoming holidays. The weather has gotten much colder so please take care of your health and enjoy sitting under the heated table in your house.

HIUC has been quite busy over the past two weeks. There have been a lot of assignments for all classes to prepare before the holidays which start tomorrow.

In the E class, students are working on essays. They are learning how to write different types of introductions and how to connect the conclusion with the beginning. Students are also working on giving specific examples. Also, everyone is still working on grammar to make longer and correct sentences. The E class also had the chance to learn how to tell stories, so they are enjoyable for the audience. They changed their intonation, changed the tone/pitch of their voice to show different characters and added dramatic pauses. Last week, they presented their own original stories and everyone did a great job. It was nice to see the audience getting excited while the students told their stories.

The F class has also been busy. In one of their classes they are working on American culture now. They have almost daily quizzes and one of their most recent quizzes was naming the 50 states and 25 capital cities. The scores were quite high with just a couple of minor spelling mistakes for most students. In their writing class, the students just finished their first discussion based on Chapter 1 of The Pearl. It was the first time for many of them to try to hold a natural discussion with many people talking almost at the same time and adding their own ideas. It was nice to see the students’ interest in the novel increase as they went deeper and deeper into the novel.

The G class is continuing to study about business and marketing, improve their reading and writing and develop their public speaking skills. In the presentation class this week, students researched one of the ancient wonders of the world, such as the Pyramids, and gave a presentation. They spoke about how and why they were possibly created as well as explaining about the culture and the time period. Many of the students had a tour guide style which was very effective. Like the F class, they are discussing the novel, The Old Man and the Sea, and are also gaining a deeper understanding of different writing styles. The discussion in today’s class was quite in depth and the students learned a lot.

Next week, HIUC has a TOEFL seminar. The students will learn some time management strategies to complete the test in the time limit as well as tips on how to improve their score. They will be studying reading, grammar and listening in the paper based test class. For those students doing the iBT class, they will focus on reading, listening, speaking and writing.

From everyone at HIUC, we wish you all very Happy Holidays and Best Wishes for 2014. Have a wonderful time with your family and friends over the vacation! We hope to see you in the next year.
