Do you know what a collocation is?  collocation is a group of two or more words that often go together.  In other words, a small group of words that naturally go together.  For example, “fast food”, “heavy traffic” or “shopping mall”.  With the Christmas and New Year break coming up many of us are thinking about Christmas.  We also often use collocations when talking about Christmas or writing Christmas cards.

Try matching the popular Christmas collocations below:
Example 1) merry ⇒ b) Christmas
2) festive ⇒
3) happy ⇒

4) family ⇒

a) gathering  b) Christmas  c) atmosphere  d) New Year!

Meaning?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
right off the bat
Sometimes you have to give information quickly, without
time to think it over. Then you would say something
                                  right off the bat.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
cover my bases
If you cover your bases, you are well prepared.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
a ballpark estimate
Let us say you want to sell your car but you do not know
exactly how much it is worth. If someone asks you the
price, you might give a ballpark figure (or a ballpark
                                 estimate).
