The Winter term is Over!
Hello. We have just finished the last week of the winter term at HIUC Osaka. Although most of our students graduated at the end of this term, many of them will return next term to keep working on their English skills. Most of them will not go overseas until June or July, so I think it is a great idea for them to take another 10 weeks of English. There is always so much more to learn.
For this blog, I focused on the last week of the term. The last week of classes really was crunch time for the students. They were very busy. We tried to give them a small taste of what life in an overseas college will be like. In my class, the students had a final exam worth 10% of their final grade and a major speech worth 15%. That means one-quarter of their total grade was decided by doing two tasks in one week.
During the last week of the semester, I walked around the school and took pictures of the various classes and students. There were students taking essay tests. That means they sat for 90 minutes and wrote an essay. There were reading tests, where students read and analyzed essays and stories. Some students had grammar and vocabulary tests. The students in the listening and speaking courses had two or three days of tests. They had listening and note taking tests. They also had speaking tests. Every student in the school had to give at least one major presentation and some students had to do as many as three. There were also a number of essays and term papers to write and hand in. Students also had their regular classes to prepare for and participate in. As you can see from the pictures, the students were busy.
Finally, at the end of the last day, we had a small end of term party. The students had some food and drinks. We also gave out completion certificates and awards.
