2nd week of the Fall term at HIUC Osaka!

Hello. The first two weeks of the fall term at HIUC Osaka have just finished. It has been great to see all the students again and to hear some of their summer break stories. We have also been joined by some new students. It looks like the new students are slowly settling into the HIUC routine. I have the level 3 listening and speaking class this term. So far, it looks like it is going to be a fun class to teach. The students are very friendly and get along well with each other. The amount of homework for the first two weeks has been a little less than usual, but after a long summer break the students need some time to get back into routine. I am sure we will be able to increase the amount of homework soon.

In the first two weeks, the reading and writing class has done some review of material from the last term and worked on some reading skills. We have looked at previewing and scanning. These skills will help students to read more effectively. We have also started to do some activities that will help the students increase their reading speed. The students have also completed their first book report. Soon we will look at skimming.

For writing, we have reviewed simple sentences and compound sentences. We have also looked at some rules for using commas and rules for capitalization. They have written many journal entries. This weekend, they will write the first draft of their first paragraph. All in all, the class is doing well.

I had a very nice surprise on the first day back to school. Almost every student completed the summer homework we handed out. In addition, they finished almost every activity that was given. A few students missed a small section or two or tried to do much of their homework in a couple of days. However, the majority of students completed everything and spread the homework over the length of their vacation. That means that many of the students were ready to use English again on the first day back to school.
I hope they keep up the good work.
