Hello. Last weekend, I had the chance to teach a “schooling.” This is a short class that we have about once a month on a Sunday at HIUC. It was for students who will join our distance learning program that starts in June.
One of the purposes of this short class is to give the students some practice with speaking and writing in English. It gives them a little introduction to writing paragraphs in English, and it gives them a little head start before they begin their classes. They get a chance to get used to taking a class all in English. They get a chance to get used to working in pairs and small groups in English. They learn how to follow class directions that are given entirely in English, and they learn some basic classroom English. It also gives them a chance to meet some of their future classmates.
This time, we did some work with comparative adjectives and talking about changes over time. You use comparative adjectives when you compare two things. Here are some examples. Scott is taller than Paul. Tina’s hair is longer than Julie’s hair. All the students knew this structure. That meant that we could spend most of our time using it. We did a vocabulary building activity, and we did an activity where students had to describe how their life has changed. They had to compare their life in junior high school to their life now. Here are some example sentences I heard. My hair is longer now. When I was in junior high school, I had short hair, but now I have long hair. My favorite subject changed. Math was my favorite subject in junior high school, but now my favorite subject is history.
Next, the students had to interview a classmate about how their life has changed. They had to take notes while they were talking to their partner. Then they had to change their notes into sentences. After that, we talked about how to organize a proper paragraph. Then the students changed their notes and sentences into proper paragraphs. At the end of the class, we finished with a short speaking activity.
It was fun to see many students meeting each other and working together.
